Michael Beijer: Technical translator & terminologist

About me

Hi, I’m Michael Beijer. I’m a Dutch ⇆ English technical/patent translator and terminologist with nearly 30 years of experience.

I provide well-researched, fluent translations from Dutch to English and vice versa. I am fully bilingual as I grew up speaking both languages. Although I’m comfortable translating a wide range of subjects – ranging from user manuals and audit reports to marketing copy and financial documents – the majority of my work currently focuses on patents and technical material.

If you’re looking for a translator with almost 30 years of experience, exceptional research skills and expertise in the field of cutting-edge translation and terminology technologies, you’ve come to the right place!

Beijerterm

Correct and consistent terminology is critical in technical translation. I therefore maintain an extensive database of specialist terminology, ‘Beijerterm’, which I present on a MediaWiki-powered website in a systematic and easily searchable format. Beijerterm is the world’s largest collection of specialist Dutch-English terminology.

If you’re struggling to translate a difficult term, there’s a high possibility you’ll find it on Beijerterm. If that fails, you can also try Proz.com’s ‘ProZ.com term search’, where I frequently rank among the top ‘KudoZ point leaders’ in my language pair.

Beijer.bot

I’m currently also building my own app, ‘Beijer.bot’, using AutoHotkey and Python. Beijer.bot is a visual dashboard that providing centralised access to many tools I use when translating. The individual items are grouped into categories like Text actions, Web searches, Bookmarks, Voice commands, etc. These can be accessed through various interaction modalities, such as clicking on menu items, using keyboard shortcuts or voice commands. For more information, see Beijer.bot.

Translation software

I am comfortable working with a wide range of translation and terminology software. I am an expert at solving the complex file ‘prepping’ and conversion problems that often slow down a translation project. Additionally, I’m a highly proficient user of memoQ, Trados Studio, Wordfast, Déjà Vu X3, CafeTran and Phrase and can easily handle their various file formats/packages.
