Confidentiality
Much of what clients send me is confidential: material that has not been published yet, and some that never will be. This page sets out how I handle it, including where AI is involved.
The basics
- I sign NDAs and confidentiality agreements on request.
- Your documents are used for your job and nothing else.
- If your agreement sets out how documents must be handled, tell me before the job starts and I will work within it.
How I use AI
I use AI where it helps, not for everything. When I do, it is in memoQ or Trados Studio through Supervertaler, the translation software I develop myself. The AI produces a first draft. I review, correct and finalise every sentence, and what you receive is my work and my responsibility.
The only AI I use for client work is Claude, from Anthropic, and only under Anthropic’s Commercial Terms, the terms for business customers:
- Treated as confidential information. The Commercial Terms class everything I send to Claude, and everything it sends back, as my confidential information. Anthropic may use it only to provide the service, and must protect it with at least reasonable care.
- Not used for training. Under the same terms, Anthropic may not train its models on it.
- Deleted within 30 days. Text sent through Anthropic’s API is automatically deleted within 30 days, unless the law or a safety review requires it to be kept longer.
- Sent directly. Supervertaler sends the text straight from my computer to Anthropic. It does not pass through any other server, mine included.
- A business plan, not a personal one. I use Anthropic’s API and a Claude Team plan, both covered by the Commercial Terms. Claude’s personal plans (Free, Pro and Max) fall under consumer terms, where whether your conversations train future models is a setting. I moved to a Team plan so that client work is never under those terms.
If your agreement says anything about AI
Some agreements restrict or rule out processing by outside services. Tell me before the job starts, and we will agree how to handle it.
