PLEASE NOTE: Some techniques described in this article (like loading a folder with DOCX and PDF or syncing with the PDF) aren't possible yet. I hope that they will make it to CafeTran Espresso 2016 Aubergine.
CafeTran offers a built-in PDF viewer that you can use to view PDFs that your clients create for you (e.g. with FrameMaker, QuickSilver etc.) or that you can create yourself (e.g. with MS Word).
Creating a PDF file with MS Word
Creating a PDF file with Microsoft Word is as simple as opening the document and saving it in the PDF file format:
Saving the source files and PDFs in the same folder
In order to enable CafeTran to load the PDF files that correspond with the files of your translation, you have to place the source files and the corresponding PDF files in the same folder:
Loading source documents and PDFs
In order to load the source files that you have to translate and the corresponding PDF files, create a new project.
- In the Project configuration dialogue box check the Translate folder with documents checkbox.
- Select the folder containing the source files and the corresponding PDF files.
- Create a new project:
Opening the PDF viewer
- In the Tools menu select PDF viewer:
A new tab will be opened in the tabbed pane, showing the PDF file that corresponds to the first document in your new project.
PLEASE NOTE: In order to make this work, the names of the source files that you have to translate and the corresponding PDF files have to be identical, except for the file extension:
- Arano Espresso 2015 Automatic.docx matches …
- Arano Espresso 2015 Automatic.pdf
For best results, make the PDF preview floating and position it on a secondary monitor:
Enjoy the wealth of a true preview:
Automatic syncing
Syncing inside a PDF file
CafeTran will try to synchronise the source segments that you translate with the corresponding text in the matching PDF file. This won't be possible always, since the text in the PDF can contain extra line feeds. CafeTran will try to do its best.
Syncing between PDF files
Once you have translated the last segment of a file that is part of a multi-file translation project, upon proceeding to the next segment, CafeTran will open the corresponding PDF file, marking the text that corresponds to the first segment of the new PDF. So while hopping from source file to source file, CafeTran will automatically open the matching PDF file.
