Using the Placeables list to exclude word groups from spell-checking

In some projects you will want to exclude certain words from spell-checking, whereas you probably don't want to add these words to the user.dic (the file that contains all words that you manually added on-the-fly). For instance: you don't want to add words in your source language to the user.dic (that contains words in your target language). However, company, brand or street names normally don't have to be translated.

How to tell CafeTran that these names should be ignored during QA > Check spelling in target segments (see: http://cafetran.wikidot.com/performing-qa-checks)? One-word fantasy names like BumaDrink, WhiteDent etc. can be added directly to the placeables.txt file by selecting an expression and clicking ‘Translation > Placeables > Add selection to placeables’ (Alt+P). See: Article not ready.

Things start to get complicated when you want to exclude names that consist of groups of words that ‘normally’ should be translated (e.g. Verkaufs, Vertriebs, Zur, Alten, Mühle).

Excluding Word Groups from Spell-checking

  • Here is a group of words that you want to exclude from spell-checking, in this case, a company name:

  • Select the word group Aranka Verkaufs Gesellschaft mbH.
  • Choose Translate > Placeables > Add selection to placeables:

NOTE that in the target segment box the individual words of the group that you have added to the placeables.txt file can remain marked by a red line, since they don't have to be added to the user.dic per se. This will have no effect on the QA > Check spelling in target segments, however.

Another example, a street name:

  • Select the word group Zur Alten Mühle.
  • Choose Translation > Placeables > Add selection to placeables:

You can use the context menu to add the name of the town to the user.dic file, since it is very likely that you will find this town in your other projects:
